IC MEMO Annual Conference 2015.

Munich Germany. November 8-11, 2015

IC MEMO is the “International Committee of Memorials and Museums for the Remembrance of the Victims of Public Crimes” within the “International Council of Museums” (ICOM). We – the individual and institutional members of IC MEMO – are a worldwide network of and for professionals in memorials and museums which are dedicated to remember the victims of all kinds of public violence and crimes and to strengthen the self-evident but too often fiercely disobeyed values determined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Our aim is to become even more a vital global framework for multicultural exchange in all memorial topics. We are pleased to invite you to our Annual Conference this year.

The Conference

The IC MEMO Conference 2015, co-sponsored by ICOM Germany, will be hosted by the Jewish Museum Munich and the Flossenbuerg Memorial Site. The meeting begins on Sunday (November 8th) in Munich with excursions to the Dachau Memorial Site, the new 1972 Olympics Massacre Memorial and the widely discussed Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism. In the evening architect Prof. Barbara Holzer (Zurich) – former team member of Daniel Libeskind – will present the key note lecture.

Monday’s (November 9th) sessions with time for workshops and panel discussions will be held at the Jewish Museum Munich (

Later that Monday participants of the conference may take part in city-wide memorial events to commemorate the victims of the infamous “Reichskristallnacht”, (November 9/10 1938), a nation-wide pogrom which was an important step in outlawing and persecuting Jews in national-socialist Germany. Munich – the so-called “Hauptstadt der Bewegung” (capital of Nazi-movement) – was the place from which the orders were sent.

The conference continues on Tuesday and Wednesday (November 10th and 11th) with a two-day excursion to Flossenbuerg Memorial Site ( – with further time for lectures and talks there and to the new Hersbruck Memorial Site . (

Central Themes

Conference sessions in Munich and Flossenbuerg deal with the question how an appropriate commemoration of public crimes and their victims could be expressed physically and artistically in the 21st century.

In the recent past new memorials and memorial sites all over the world provoked controversies about their design and symbolism. The relationship between content and form became a controversial issue of discussion both among historians and architects. The conference will put a special focus on this topic and offers vivid examples to study and to discuss recent architectural and artificial projects at memorials in Dachau, Flossenbuerg and Munich.

We would like to invite presentations or workshops that explore the following questions:

  • What are your experiences with the forming of and the working with the memorial architecture and arts in your institution?
  • What could be fruitful perspectives in international and intercontinental cooperation between memorials and within a network like IC Memo?
  • What are new developments in public remembrance of ideological, social, racist crimes committed by states or social and political groups?
  • What is the role of Memorial Museums in public discussions about commemoration and what is their significance for a democratic development in different parts of the world?
  • What is the current situation of Memorial Museums especially in Africa, Asia and Latin America?
  • If you would like to give a brief presentation about your memorial institution, please submit your request as soon as possible.
